Western Australia’s mining sector is undergoing crucial changes.
By March 31, 2026, all Statutory Supervisors must meet specific Work Health and Safety (WHS) competency requirements. CORE Security Training offers a Statutory Supervisor Course to help you confidently meet these standards and enhance your career in mine safety.
Statutory Supervisors Eligibility Requirements
The Work Health and Safety (Mines) Regulations 2022, particularly Part 10.7A, define the roles and responsibilities of statutory positions within mines. Mine operators designate statutory supervisors to ensure the safety and efficiency of mining operations.
To qualify as a statutory supervisor, individuals must:
- At least 2 years of mining experience
- Complete approved WHS risk management course
- Pass the mandatory supervisor legislation exam
Statutory roles vary in their functions, obligations, and required qualifications, with some needs specific certifications.
Key Statutory Positions in WA Mining
Under WHS law, mine operators are required to appoint qualified personnel to the statutory positions outlined in Schedule 26 of the WHS Mines Regulations.
Key positions include:
- Site Senior Executive
- Exploration Manager
- Underground Manager (Non-Coal)
- Underground Manager (Coal)
- Quarry Manager
For a comprehensive list, visit WorkSafe Western Australia for detailed information on WHS statutory positions and their eligibility criteria.
Responsibilities of a Statutory Supervisor
A statutory supervisor’s duties include:
- Task assignment within designated work areas.
- Effective oversight of workers and on-site personnel.
- Proactive inspection of travel routes and work areas to identify potential hazards.
- Diligent efforts to protect workers and others from safety hazards.
- Providing detailed written reports during shift handovers, as required under regulation 630.
What's New: Transition from Section 44 to Schedule 26
Schedule 26 replaces the former Section 44, updating the requirements established under the Mines Safety and Inspection Act 1994. These updates are part of the Work Health and Safety (Mines) Regulations 2022.
Under the WHS Mines Regulations, a transition period allows competent individuals to serve as statutory supervisors until March 20, 2026. After this date, all supervisors must fully meet the eligibility criteria for their positions.
